Hexells, (2020)
The exact definition of life or intelligence is very hard to give, especially if we want to talk about life in general, beyond the specific carbon-based kind, that we observe at a particular time-space scale at the planet Earth. That’s why in our quest of creating artificial life we often rely on aesthetic feeling, that tells us that a particular behaviour or shape “looks natural”. Self-organisation – the ability of tiny particles to reach global goals through local interactions – is one of the most prominent traits of nature. That’s how we build our own bodies, that’s how our brains work. Hexells is an Artificial Self-Organising System based on the Neural Cellular Automaton architecture. It consists of cells that were trained to build diverse texture patterns through communication between neighbour cells only.
